Burundi is a country of hills and mountains. That contributes to some of the unique traits of this coffee which is grown be-tween 1,250 meters and 2,000 meters above the sea level.
Because of the high population density - one of the highest in Africa - coffee is grown on small farms which also feature other crops such as cassava, potatoes and beans. Each farmer may have between 50 and 250 coffee trees. They mostly use natural mulch as organic fertilizer to preserve moisture and enhance the soil. Over 800,000 families are involved in the coffee growing activity.
